WELCOME TO OUR CALENDAR
We're excited to share this Church calendar with you, which includes Major Holy Days, known as "Great Feasts," and guidelines for fasting. It's important to remember that these are meant to be a helpful resource for your Christian journey, both as individuals and as a community. We want to stress the significance of taking care of your physical and spiritual well-being while following these guidelines.
When exploring this calendar, it's crucial to view everything in the context of your Christian faith. Saint Paul's Letter to the Romans, Chapter 14 (specifically verses 5 & 6), offers valuable guidance. The Apostle advises against turning these observances into a source of guilt or condemnation for those who may not follow them in the same way. Jesus taught us about freedom, not restriction, and feeling burdened by fasting rules is not the essence of Christianity. Judging others for their perceived shortcomings in this regard takes us far from the path of love and compassion. All of these practices should be carried out "to the Lord," as Saint Paul teaches. Your personal conscience should be your guide in matters of personal piety. Please keep this in mind as you explore the guidance in this calendar.
THE IMPORTANT FASTING DAYS
There are a few obligatory fast days in our calendar, and they include:
ASH WEDNESDAY - The 40th "weekday" before Easter.
GOOD FRIDAY - The Friday before Easter.
HOLY SATURDAY (until noon) - The day before Easter.
Fasting during these specific days is a strict requirement. Ignoring these fasts will be considered a significant transgression, as they hold great significance in our tradition. Additionally, we have other fast days of varying degrees of recommendation and permissibility.
FASTING FOR SPIRITUAL NOURISHMENT
Fasting is highly recommended during the entire Lenten season, which lasts more than 40 days. It's also the norm during the Lent of Moses, spanning the 40 days after Pentecost, and during the Advent season of 40 days leading up to Christmas. Another opportunity for fasting occurs during the Winter Fast, which begins on January 7, the day after Epiphany.
You're also encouraged to fast on Wednesdays and Fridays throughout the year, and some of our fellow Celtic Christians even observe fasting on Mondays. The AFCC community practices a 3-day fast when a serious matter arises and 30-40 days before ordination or the inauguration of a new ministry. Health, age, and other reasonable factors are valid excuses for modifying or omitting these fasts.
Special fast days may be observed throughout the year, such as Saint Patrick's Day, even if it falls during Lent. However, we never fast during the "Twelve Days of Christmas" or during Eastertide.
Communion fasting is a personal choice, and you can fast from midnight before receiving Holy Communion or even longer if you feel it's appropriate for your spiritual journey. However, it's important to know that fasting before Communion is not an apostolic practice, and it's not binding on all faithful. Don't let fasting become an obstacle to your faith; it should enhance your connection with God.
REMEMBER THE TRUE ESSENCE OF FASTING
It's essential to note that medicines and water never break a fast; they are always allowed. People who are aged, infirm, children, nursing mothers, or those whose health may be at risk are exempt from food and drink fasting rules. However, they should emphasize the spiritual fast, which involves turning your heart and soul toward God through prayer and meditation. Fasting is not just about abstaining from food; it's also about staying pure and focused on God, rejecting sinful thoughts and actions.
In conclusion, fasting is a valuable discipline that can bring you closer to God. The Church Fathers frequently encourage us to combine prayer and fasting to draw nearer to our merciful God.

Special Note: While we have our own lectionary for our community's use, we permit the use of the Revised Common Lectionary for our weekly church services. The Revised Common Lectionary is a well-structured three-year cycle of Scripture readings that encompasses passages from the four Gospels of the New Testament, selections from the Old Testament, Psalms, and the Epistles of the New Testament. This arrangement is designed to ensure that over the course of three years, we delve into a wide array of important Biblical topics and lessons.
The term "Revised Common Lectionary" stems from its widespread use among various Christian denominations and churches. To access these prescribed readings, you can refer to resources available at Vanderbilt University or the Lectionary Page by date. You may choose to download or copy them directly from these sources.
